Music Weekly: Coldwave Special
We remember forgotten 80s electronic genre Cold Wave, with the help of Joe Daniel from Angular Records and Dutch band Nine Circles.
Time for something a bit different this week, as Music Weekly investigates incredible lost synth-pop from the early 80s. Cold Wave was a scene that was never a scene – a bunch of musicians scattered across Europe (and beyond) who emerged out of post-punk with an icy new sound. Often armed with the first affordable synthesisers and inspired by Kraftwerk, Throbbing Gristle and Joy Division, they set about making a fascinating new noise that’s been virtually ignored by pop historians. Until now, that is. A brilliant new compilation entitled Cold Waves and Minimal Electronics Vol 1 is released this week on Angular Records, and Tim Jonze met Angular boss Joe Daniel to discover how he tracked down a musical treasure trove. Tim also chats to Lidia the Rose from the Dutch band Nine Circle to see what it was like making Cold Wave.
